May 22 (Wed) & May 24 (Fri), 3-5: Laboratory for Digital Cultural Heritage, YRL
Dana Diminescu, Professor of Sociology at Mines-Telecom in Paris and the director of the Migration and telecommunications program at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris will conduct two workshops in the Laboratory for Digital Cultural Heritage (LDCH) in the first floor of YRL. Diminescu, who runs the migration and telecommunications program at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, has recently directed a pathbreaking project, the e-Diasporas Atlas, which provides a publicly available data base of 8,000 migrant websites as well as the tools to analyze them: http://www.e-diasporas.fr/index.html#top . The two workshops will be designed to orient researchers to the data base and to provide initial instruction in the tools available for analysis. As this is a very rich data base, the surface of which has barely been scratched, the workshops should be of interest to many migration scholars, regardless of disciplinary background. All of the data are publicly accessible and can be analyzed using a variety of commonly available software programs.
