Kababayan, the Pilipino/a-American Student Organization at the University of California, Irvine, presents their fifth annual Kababayan conference, “Scratching the Surface:  30 Years, 5 Aspects, 1 Culture,” for educating others and raising awareness through a series of workshops, panels, roundtable discussions, and speakers.

As a student organization, Kababayan emphasizes the social, cultural, academic, political, and community aspects of the Pilipino American experience.  In order to fulfill their mission, “Kaba” has developed many diverse events and programs that highlight these aspects of Pilipino American culture.

The conference theme, “Scratching the Surface:  30 Years, 5 Aspects, I Culture,” attempts to bring to light issues of the Pilipino/a-American community that many may not be aware of.  Beginning with registration and a light breakfast at 8 am and lasting until 5 pm, invited guests and speakers will touch on issues that reflect this theme.   Issues such as the implementation of Tagalog and Pilipino Studies, the Philippine sex trade, sexuality and identity, and the various economic and political struggles affecting Pilipino and Pilipino-Americans here and abroad will be discussed in the conference.

Other workshops including the history and heritage of the Philippine tattoos, song, and dance, as well as contemporary issues such as Pilipinos and media representation will be highlighted as well throughout the day's event.  In addition, lunch and entertainment will be provided.
