Professor Robert Ostergard received his PhD in Political Science from the State University of New York, Binghamton in 1999. His areas of study include international relations and security policy, comparative politics with a regional focus on Africa, international political economy, civil-military relations, and civil conflict. His current research is centered on the long and short-term impact that the HIV/AIDS epidemic may pose to individual state security and to the security of the international system. He is also engaged in research on the role of intellectual property rights in third world development.

Professor Ostergard is currently an assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Nevada-Reno.
