Doran Ross Talk at the Bowers Museum on "Gold is Sharper than the Sword: Royal Arts of Southern Ghana"


The Bowers Museum presents Doran H. Ross, former Director of the Fowler Museum at UCLA, discussing the chiefs and queen mothers of the Asante and other Akan peoples of southern Ghana, renowned for some of the most spectacular traditions of dress and court regalia in all of Africa.

Mr. Ross will interpret the relationship between leader and citizen in a traditional Akan state by examining ceremonial objects such as the famous hand-made kente cloth, ornate weaponry, and distinct pieces of gold jewelry.

Presented in large format color photographs, photographers Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher’s images of African ritual practices are vivid, rich, intimate and intense.  This dynamic exhibition of images from around the African continent is divided into six themes: Coming of Age, Courtship and Marriage, Beliefs and Worship, Masks and Masquerades, Royalty and Power, and Spirits and Ancestors.  Six videos bring to life the song, dance and movement of related ceremonies and, objects of personal adornment similar to those as in the photographs will be included. Three-dimensional objects from the Bowers Museum’s permanent collection of African objects will also be on display.  Beckwith and Fisher have traveled and lived within Africa together and independently over the last thirty years prolifically documenting tradition and ceremony.

Open late the fourth Thursday of every month until 8:00 pm
Please note: The museum will close at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 18, 2009 in preparation for the annual Gala.

General Admission: General Admission tickets allow access to all of the Bowers Museum's exhibitions. Adults $12.00; Seniors (age 62 or older) $9.00; Students $9.00; Children 6-17 $9.00; Children under 6 Free. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.


Cost : $8 for lecture only; free admission to lecture with paid admission to museum (see below), free for Bowers Museum members.
