ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Matthew Spence is the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East policy. From 2009 to 2012, Spence was on the National Security Council staff at the White House, first as senior advisor to National Security Advisors Tom Donilon and General Jim Jones and then as special assistant to the president and senior director for international economic affairs. He also served on President-elect Obama's National Security Council transition team. Prior to that, Spence was co-founder and director of the Truman National Security Project, practiced law at Munger, Tolles and Olson in California, and served as a law clerk for Judge Richard Posner of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Spence is widely published in foreign affairs, with his work appearing in the Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, Yale Law Journal and various books and publications. Spence received a doctorate in international relations from the University of Oxford, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and a B.A. and an M.A. in international policy studies from Stanford University.
