HIV/AIDS in Africa Lecture Series
Following a trip to Kenya in August of 2003 to meet with long-time colleagues addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in that country, Dr. Neumann traveled to Changsha, Human Province, China on September 14, 2003 for ten days to share knowledge about best practices in HIV prevention and control from the Kenya experience.
Hunan HIV prevention experts made the request in order to decide what might be useful to them and thereby benefit from the experience of others. The methodology used to learn about best practices in Kenya consisted of interviews and of obtaining existing reports and materials. Persons interviewed included high officials in the National AIDS Control Council of the Office of the President, other senior government officials, a key WHO official, Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) staff, private sector experts, and individuals. Grass-roots sites, including those serving the very poor and special populations, were also visited. Hundreds of pages of materials were obtained including the Kenya National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan.
Dr. Alfred Neumann, MA (Econ), MD, MPH, FACPM is a Professor Emeritus of the UCLA School of Public Health. He will share experiences and best practices from his long career researching public health issues in Africa and China, and will provide advice to those interested in entering this area of research.
