Special Presentation by N. B. Mhlongo and Thandi Chiliza, South African women active in the fight to combat AIDS/HIV in their country.
Nonhlanhla Baby Mhlongo was born and raised in Durban, South Africa, and is a graduate of the University of Zululand. In 1980 she joined Umlazi Place of Safety where she helped start a school now called the Thokozani Combined Primary School. In 1983, she became a social worker at Prince Mshiyeni Hospital and later in 1996 was named head of the Welfare Division and then Manager of the Sinikithemba HIV/AIDS center at McCord Hospital. While at McCord, she helped organize the Sinikithemba Choir from a support group for HIV-infected patients. The choir travels internationally to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and in 2003, formed an income generation/support group for HIV+ and destitute women in the Durban area. The group, called Anix Trading, is an economic empowerment project which produces jewelry, gifts and home notions. Anix Trading also offers training in bead and wirework to nearly 150 HIV+ and destitute women in Durban. Her latest effort is an orphanage that provides care for children whose parents are HIV+.
Thandi Chiliza is one of eight siblings from the township of KwaMashu, just outside of Durban. Taught to bead by her aunt at age 12, Ms. Chiliza started working at the Sinikithemba HIV Clinic in 1999. She joined Anix Trading in 2003, where she helps train the next generation of beaders. She credits Anix Trading with helping her and many others in similar circumstances earn a living to help support their families.
