An exhibition by five world-renowned photographers from the VII Photo Agency who traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from May through August of 2005 with the international humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in order to shed light on the suffering of the Congolese people as they struggle to survive a war that remains virtually invisible to the outside world. Their work is presented in Democratic Republic of the Congo: Forgotten War.
More than a decade of war and the collapse of the public health system in the Congo have resulted in widespread and acute misery. Many Congolese face extreme deprivation and violence, with brutal militia attacks and sexual violence common. Severe malnutrition and epidemics of diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, and cholera take an even greater toll with little treatment possible. The complex and diverse nature of the violence and neglect challenges any notion of simple, blanket solutions to address even the immediate causes of so much death and suffering.
Thursday, April 6 from 6 to 9 pm - a free benefit reception for Doctors Without Borders and VII photographers will be held. A brief talk on the Congo by Ron Haviv and Kris Torgeson from Doctors Without Borders will occur at 7pm. All of the exhibiting photographers will be present at the opening. Books will also be available for purchase, and donations to Doctors Without Borders are encouraged. The exhibition will tour throughout the United States, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe.
April 7 through April 9, 2006 - The photojournalists of the VII Photo Agency will host a seminar at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. This three-day seminar will feature practical breakout sessions covering topics like creative innovation, personal projects, assignments, book publishing and fine art.
