Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System (LACERS) to discuss divestment of city funds from Sudan in response to the ongoing Darfur genocide.

We need your help and support. Please come to the LACERS meeting and wear green!
The new millennium’s first genocide rages unabated into its third year in the Darfur region of Sudan. For the first time in history, the US government, along with numerous other political and non-profit entities, has declared that an ongoing massacre amounts to genocide. Divestment is one of the sharpest tools of influence US institutions have for influencing Sudan’s behavior. Indeed, numerous states, cities, and universities have already divested while dozens of others are currently debating this option. Building on this momentum, the Sudan Divestment Task Force has developed a unique model of divestment that maximizes divestment's impact on the government of Sudan while minimizing unintended harmful effects on innocent Sudanese citizens and on the health of institutional investments.
The Los Angeles Times has stated, “The divestment movement [helps] draw international attention to the appalling situation in Darfur while pressuring the foreign companies working with the murderous Sudanese government to pull out. That could be a catalyst for change in Africa's worst killing zone.”
