From Nuzi to Medina or The Birth Hour of Islamic Law

A public lecture by David Powers, Cornell University

David S. Powers is Professor of Islamic law and history at Cornell University. His most recent book is Law, Society and Culture in the Maghrib, 1300-1500 (Cambridge University Press, 2002). His Studies in Qur'an and Hadith: The Formation of the Islamic Law of Inheritance (University of California Press, 1986) has recently been translated into Bahasa Indonesian as Peralihin Kekayaan dan Politik Kekuasaan: Kritik Historis Hukum Waris (LkiS, Yogyakarta, 2001). He is also the editor of the journal Islamic Law and Society.
