Invitation extended by Bianca A. Murillo, UCSB; contact her for additional info at bmuril00@umail.ucsb.edu

Please join us for the opening reception of "Edible Empire: African Cocoa in a Global Economy" on Tuesday, November 14, from 4:30-6:30 at the University of California at Santa Barbara's Faculty Club.

Curated by an interdisciplinary group of graduate students specializing in Art history, African and Modern European history, and cultural and gender studies, Edible Empire will exhibit original 19th and 20th century materials and images focused on the West African cocoa industry.  This exhibition addresses the historical significance of cocoa as a global commodity, its role in the development of global capitalism, and its place in constructing broader understandings of
Europe's empires, its people and products.

Edible Empire will include a silent auction with bidding on the featured artwork.  All proceeds and donations will go to the Day Chocolate Company, partially owned and operated by a fair-trade Ghanaian cocoa farming cooperative.
