The UCLA Cuba and the Caribbean Working Group presents a talk by Judith Bettelheim, Art History, San Francisco State University.
Judith Bettelheim is an art historian and curator. She received her doctorate in African and African Diaspora art history from Yale University in 1979 and has been a Professor of Art History at San Francisco State University since 1981. In 1988 Bettelheim co-curated and co-authored Caribbean Festival Arts for the Saint Louis Art Museum. She is the editor of Cuban Festivals: A Century of Afro-Cuban Culture (Ian Randle Publishers 2001). She authored "Ethnicity, Gender, and Power in Carnaval in Santiago de Cuba" in Negotiating Performance in Latin/o America (Duke University Press 1994). Her article “Palo Monte Mayombe and Contemporary Cuban Art” appeared in African Arts, Fall 2001. In June 2005, she published “Caribbean Espiritismo (Spiritist ) Altars: The Indian and the Congo” in the Art Bulletin. Numerous scholarly articles have appeared in African Arts, Caribbean-based academic journals, and academic anthologies. Her newest project is a touring exhibition with catalog "AfroCuba: Works on Paper, 1968-2003." A light reception will follow the presentation.
