Ramzi Rouighi will present findings from his latest research project on the Berbers
The presentation will propose a new interpretation of the structures that supported the existence of ancient Berbers. It is a historical analysis of the ways the Berbers populated ancient Africa and the impact that this development has had on our understanding of both Berbers and northwest Africa. Issues of origins, language, and culture will be discussed to delineate new research possibilities.
Ramzi Rouighi is Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California. He received his Ph.D. in history from Columbia University in 2005. His research centers on the economic, political, and cultural history of the medieval Mediterranean with a focus on the Maghrib. At USC, Professor Rouighi teaches medieval and modern Middle Eastern and African history. He is currently preparing for publication a study based on his dissertation research which focuses on the migration of Andalusians into the Maghrib in the later medieval period. The presentation is from a new research project on the Berbers.
