Special community night hosted by presented UCLA African Studies Center, the UCLA Art | Global Health Center, and the Fowler Museum at UCLA.
This special networking reception is uniquely designed for Los Angeles area AIDS activists and Africanists. The will feature various organizations working on AIDS education/prevention and/or Africa. Established in 1959, the UCLA African studies Center is the oldest such institution committed to teaching, research, and public understanding of the African continent. The Art | Global Health Center at UCLA is committed to supporting and developing scholarship focused at the nexus of art and health and to reuniting the consideration of art and health around the globe. This event seeks to capitalize on the vast resources of these two UCLA units and their community partners by facilitating a networking opportunity with the aim of building key partnerships.
The evening will feature access to “Make Art/Stop AIDS,” a 4,000-square-foot exhibition that includes 75 works of art from the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, and India. Once the exhibition leaves California it will continue on to museums in Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa. Guests will also get an opportunity to view the exhibition “Mami Wata: Arts for Water Spirits in Africa and Its Diasporas”. The water spirit Mami Wata (Mother Water) is celebrated throughout much of Africa and the African Atlantic. Experience the debut of this multimedia exhibition and explore the visual cultures and histories of Mami Wata through a dynamic presentation of the rich array of arts surrounding her—sculpture, paintings, masks, posters, and more from west and central Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, and the United States.
The evening will also include performance from the Jazz Capoeira Sunset Roda. The Mpevula Coalition and local artists brings you an evening of music, movement and oral wisdom designed to unmask the essence of objective reality. Come and participate to see how ritual in all its components can address conflict in our lives and societies.
