AAA Meeting and Free Film Screening of Bamako

The African Activist Association (AAA) at UCLA presents a free film screening of Abderrahmane Sissako's Bamako. AAA will hold a meeting prior to the screening.

Please join the members of the African Activist Association at UCLA for the first meeting of winter quarter! Come and help organize upcoming events including the AAA film series and conference.

About the film:

Set in the courtyard of a mud walled house in Bamako, the capital city of Mali, the intimate personal story of an African couple on the verge of breaking up is told alongside very public political proceedings. African civil society is taking action against the World Bank and the IMF whom they directly blame for African’s woes. A lush mix of warm colors and inspirational music, Bamako is a unique opportunity for a worldwide audience to become familiar with contemporary Africa.

About the director:

Abderrahmane Sissako was born in 1961 in Mauritania; Sissako spent his childhood in Mali. He later spent over 10 years in Moscow, where he studied at the VGIK Film Institute. In his shorts, documentaries and feature-length fiction films, Sissako has often explored the exile experience and the relationship between African and Western societies.
