Gender and Sufism in the Popular Neighborhoods of Senegal

Professor Penda Mbow examines the role of women in the expression of Sufism in Senegal.

Professor Mbow's paper examines vibrant expressions of Sufism in Senegal civil society.  Particular attention is paid to the needs of women and their use of religious organizations in their fight for gender equality.  The author also addresses current national debates focused on the family code, personal status code, and the larger question of human rights in Senegal.

Dr. Penda Mbow is a senior professor of history at the University of Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal.  She is an accomplished scholar, activist and politician.  She is president of an NGO called Mouvement Citoyen which is an outreach program to train and educate underprivileged urban youngsters, especially women, in Senegal.  She is the former Minister of Culture of Senegal.  In January 2004 she was awarded the Distinguished French Legion of Honor.
