Ambassador Wayne E. Neill
Wayne E. Neill is a career member in the Senior Foreign Service and the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Benin. Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Neill was Special Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs from 2002 to 2003, and directed the African Bureau's Office of Regional Affairs from 2000 to 2002. He was Political and Economic Counselor in Cairo from 1997 to 1999 and U.S. Energy Advisor at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris from 1993 to 1996. His other overseas assignments include Riyadh, Tunis, Budapest, and Poznan; his Washington assignments focused on the Balkans and the former Soviet Union. Ambassador Neill holds the State Department's Superior Honor Award and two Meritorious Honor Awards, and was a recipient of two group Superior Honor Awards.
Ambassador Neill earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California, from which he graduated cum laude and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He is a distinguished graduate of the National War College, and studied law at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is licensed to practice law in California and is a member of the American Bar Association. His foreign languages include French, Arabic, and Polish.
