The University of California, Irvine Program in African American Studies presents a two-day conference entitled "Dred Scott: Citizenship, the Human, and the Political A/Effect of Racial Blackness."

The Dred Scott conference seeks to interrogate the cultural, historical, and political terms by which the US Supreme Court in 1857, in what is considered its most controversial ruling, disposes of African American populations in the emerging US national configuration so as to exclude African Americans juridically and therefore, definitely, from the civic term of the US Federal Compact.
