Thursday, February 20, 2003The Africanist Activist Association and the UCLA James S. Coleman African Studies Center are sponsoring a special film screening of Amandla! Revolution in Four Part Harmony. Lee Hirsch's documentary is an extraordinary testament to the power of song and a heartfelt tribute to the South African people who harnessed that power in their long fight for freedom. Amandla! reveals many freedom songs to be a communal effort, and one that sometimes goes back generations. The film also reached out to world-renowned musicians Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba and Abdullah Ibrahim, artists whose music communicated so much about South Africa's quest for freedom. The screening will be followed by a discussion period with producer Sherry Simpson.
