A Report on the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD)
Shyaam M. Shabaka presents this report, originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Shabaka is President of the International Child Resource Institute (ICRI), Executive Director of EcoVillage Farm Center, and President and CEO of Shabaka and Associate International, Inc. He has been actively involved in sustainable development work for over 35 years, both domestically and internationally, and has extensive experience in Africa. He currently teaches at UC Berkeley on "HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Tuberculosis in Africa."

Shyaam M. Shabaka has been actively involved in sustainable development work for over 35 years, both domestically and internationally. He began his international work first as a Peace Corps Volunteer for Micronesia and Nigeria and was in Nigeria when BiAfrica War erupted in 1967-68. Since that time he has remained involved in Africa’s development as a health and economic development consultant, visiting over 16 different countries in Africa.
In addition to his regular work in Africa, Mr. Shabaka was also an active participant in the following historical African events: 1) The First (All Africa) Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC), Lagos, Nigeria, 1978; 2) The first Africa, Africa America Economic Development Summit, Abajan, Cote Au, 1991; 3) South Africa’s First Democratic election (worked as a United Nation’s Election observer), 1994; and 4) The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), Johannesburg, South Africa, 2002.
Mr. Shabaka’s current activities include assisting with the planning and development of low income and affordable housing for the homeless residents of Alexandria (Alex), South Africa and working with the residents of Bahir Dar, Ethiopia in the development of a Botanical and Biological Reserve, Drainage (Flood Control) System and in sustainable agriculture.
Mr. Shabaka also serves as President of the International Child Resource Institute (ICRI), a non-governmental organization (NGO) involved in the development of first class child care centers and other social programs in various places throughout the world. His domestic activities include serving on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco League of Urban Gardens (SLUG), Food First, Oakland’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Board, and President/CEO of Shabaka and Associate International, Inc. The Oakland, CA resident is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, School of Public Health (M.P.H.), and The University of Texas (B.S.). He has also completed special course work at Harvard, University of Virginia, University of Southern California and the Western Institute of Social Research (WISR).
