Subject: A Taste of Africa

Duration of Lesson: 1 semester

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Rationale: This unit intends to give first grade students a taste of Africa and its diversity. The topics explored will the art, music, and folk tales of Western Africa.

 

Lesson Objectives:

Students are expected to :

1. Listen attentively to African folk tales.

2. Ask questions for clarification and understanding of the folk tales.

3. Learn and use descriptive words when speaking about people, places, things, and events.

4. Recite poems, songs, and stories.

5. Retell stories using chronological order, questioning, and central ideas of simple expository or narrative passages.

6. Write brief narratives describing an experience.

7. Demonstrate the meaning of addition and subtraction through the use of African games.

8. Describe the rights and individual responsibilities of citizenship.

9. Use maps and globes to locate the continent of Africa in relation to the Americas.

10. Compare and contrast everyday life in different times and places and recognize that some

aspects of people, places, and things change over time and others stay the same.

11. Understand basic economic concepts and the role of individual choice in a free- market economy.
