Subject: Ancient Ghana, Land Of Gold

Duration of Lesson: 9-10 days 

Grade Level: 6th, 7th and 8th

Rationale: Introduce students to the cultures that developed in Africas oldest interior empires, including the development of iron agricultural tools and weapons; an alphabet; and a profitable trade that extended to Arabia, India, sub-Saharan Africa, and possibly China.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. To accurately locate and mark the physical feature of the Niger River by using descriptive readings.
  2. To analyze the physical features and the cultural characteristics of the Niger River region to see how they effected the people.
  3. To evaluate primary source artifacts and literature from the area to suggest the motivations of the people.
  4. To compare and contrast the settlement patterns and lifestyles of the people living in the region today.
