Stephen Commins works in areas of regional and international development, with an emphasis on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and International Finance Institutions, especially the World Bank. Commins was Director of the Development Institute at the UCLA African Studies Center in the 1980s, and then worked as Director of Policy and Planning at World Vision International . Presently he is Social Policy Specialist for the Human Development Network of the World Bank. In his work with NGOs, Commins was a member of NGO-World Bank reviews of structural adjustment, privatization, civil society dialogues and girls education programs. His work has also included policy and institutional studies of responses to Complex Humanitarian Emergencies. Dr. Commins is worked in 1998-99 on a project with the World Bank on the social costs of the Asia financial crisis. His present work includes the Bank's new initiative on "Managing Dimensions of Economic Crisis: Good Practices for Policies and Institutions," thematic areas of youth and emergent civil society formation.
At UCLA, Dr. Commins teaches courses in regional and international development, and the role of Non-Governmental Organizations. He has taught on rebuilding wartorn societies, food security, environmental policies, and structural adjustment policies.
