Academic Programs
The academic programs are comprised of both graduate and undergraduate education and includes a Minor in African Studies, a Master of Arts in African Studies, PhD in various disciplines with an Africa focus and instruction in several African languages -- Hausa, Twi, Swahili, Afrikaans, Zulu, Yoruba, Amharic, Wolof, etc.
PhD Programs with emphasis on Africa
While UCLA does not offer PhD in African Studies, students can apply to and enroll in PhD programs in other disciplines and choose to focus their research on Africa. At present there are about 70 Ph.D. students enrolled in various departments with a research focus related to Africa. These include the departments of Anthropology; Linguistics; History; Geography; Political Science; Folklore & Mythology; Comparative Literature; Ethnomusicology; Art History; and the Schools of Public Policy and Social Research; Public Health; Theatre, Film and Television; and Arts & Architecture.
