The University of California’s Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) will offer four to six internships to master’s, professional school, medical school, or pre-dissertation level doctoral students. These Washington D.C. internships allow graduate students in UC degree programs to gain valuable practical experience and contacts for future career opportunities.
The IGCC Washington D.C. Internship Program offers a $3,000 living stipend during a ten-week internship. The award also includes a $500 travel allowance for roundtrip airfare between California and Washington, D.C., or other travel expenses justified as critical to the internship project.
Internship Placement and Living Arrangements
Internship applicants should identify and contact potential internship opportunities with Washington D.C.–based international affairs organizations. Although the IGCC Washington D.C. Representative will assist with internship contacts and related arrangements, final placement responsibility lies with the award recipient. Interns may live in accommodations of their choice or available student housing through the University of California, Washington Center.
Students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
The student must be full-time, in good academic standing, and have completed at least one year in his or her graduate program.
Pre-dissertation doctoral students are only eligible during their first or second year.
The internship should provide experience relevant to the student's academic and/or career objectives.
Applicants do not need to be returning students.
To apply, submit one original and nine copies (total 10 packets) of the following materials,
in the following order:
Completed application form. Note: IGCC funds are administered through the recipient’s graduate department. Please contact your department’s financial staff member (usually a department Fiscal or Business Officer) for the appropriate contact information.
Internship proposal (1,000–1,500 words). The proposal should discuss the student’s internship goals in relation to his or her academic and career objectives. The proposal should also identify three organizations for potential internship placement. Information on placement organizations should be as specific and detailed as possible and include any contacts or correspondence initiated by the applicant.
Graduate school transcript (photocopies are acceptable).
Two letters of recommendation, at least one ofwhich must be from a UC faculty member.
Two-sided copies are encouraged. Incomplete applications will be returned.

Applications must be postmarked by Monday, January 23, 2006. Express mail submission by the deadline is also acceptable. Date stamps from a local campus program office, contract and grants office, or graduate studies office are not acceptable.
Contracts and Grants/Sponsored Projects: Please contact your local sponsored projects office to determine submission and approval requirements on your campus for receipt of UC funding.
Each graduate school, department and applicant is responsible for compliance with local campus contract and grant requirements and local campus deadlines.
Security Clearances: Students are encouraged to consider internships that do not require security clearances. Security clearances (for example, State Department, Defense Department) may require a six- to nine-month application process. Students are responsible for applying for security clearances.
Multiple Funding Sources: Students who receive additional funding from other sources may have their award reduced at IGCC's discretion.
Academic Credit: Academic credit for the internship is determined by individual departments.
Proposal Review and Award Notification
The IGCC Steering Committee will award the IGCC International Affairs Graduate Summer Internships. The IGCC Steering Committee is a multidisciplinary group with representatives from each UC campus and from the Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Final selections will be announced in March 2005.
