Luce Colloquium: Christianity and the Religious Revolution in Modern Korean History

Histories of modern Korea invariably focus on the dramatic political and economic transformation Korea underwent over the course of the 20th century. No one can deny that Korea¡¯s change from monarchy to democracy and from agrarian poverty to industrial wealth is worthy of our attention. However, the modern transformation of Korea¡¯s religious culture should not be slighted.  Since the end of the nineteenth century, Korea has changed from a country in which the government exercised ritual hegemony to a country that enjoys religious freedom, and from a country whose religions focused on ethics and practice to one in which much religious discourse is now theologically grounded. In this talk, Professor Baker I will trace the trajectory of this revolutionary change in Korean religiosity and explain how Christianity stimulated and shaped it.
