In the Company of Strangers: Filipinos at Home and Abroad
Book talk with author Michelle Cruz Skinner
Wednesday, March 03, 2010
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
1301 Rolfe Hall
Hawaii-based writer Michelle Cruz Skinner writes about Filipinos, but the range of their stories, both in location and emotional depth, is very broad. The characters find solace in each other in foreign lands, or "In the Company of Strangers," as one story is titled, or find themselves caught by the exigencies common to migrant workers, except that these are migrant workers of the new global economy. And, yes, sometimes the company of strangers is found in the modern day Philippines itself.
Michelle Cruz Skinner has published two short story collections, Balikbayan and Mango Seasons (nominated for the 1996 Philippine National Book Award). “Faith Healer,” from Balikbayan, was selected for the PEN Syndicated Fiction Project and her work has been adapted for stage and public radio. She was born in Manila and raised primarily in Olongapo City, Philippines. She lives in Hawai‘i with her husband and two children.
Limited discounted copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
Cost: Free and open to the public.
