A major Korean poet, Ko Un, comes to Los Angeles to read from his two books published by Green Integer Press (Los Angeles): Songs for Tomorrow and Ten Thousand Lives.

Ko Un:

Born in 1933 in southwestern Korea, Ko Un grew up in a Japanese-controlled land that was soon to experience the horrors of the Korean War. In 1952, he became a Buddhist monk, and began writing in the late 1950s. Since then, Ko has been recognized as one of the most notable living Korean writers and has regularly been nominated and short-listed for the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1982, Ko Un published his Collected Poems in Korea.

As the Koyoto Journal observed: Ko Un is widely acknowledge to be Korea's foremost contemporary poet; yet he is not "the literary poet" using his art to put a grid of order unto chaos (which is ultimately too simplistic and dualistic of a perspective), but he is able to see from a bird's-eye view, all perspectives, without superimposing any judgment, pit or revulsion."

Ko will be reading from both collections of Songs for Tomorrow: A Collection of Poems 1960-2002 and Ten Thousand Lives in Korean and English translation (read by Green Integer publisher, Douglas Messerli).

Ko Un's books will be on sale along with the book signing event.
