CISA Lunchtime Talk: "Stories of Connection and Disconnection in the Bibiyana Gas Field in Bangladesh"
By Dr. Zahir Ahmed, Postdoctoral Fulbright Scholar, Department of Anthropology, UC Irvine
Monday, January 09, 2012
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
10383 Bunche Hall
The Bibiyana Gas Field in Sylhet (the second largest in the country), in particular, and the presence of Chevron as a giant US multinational in Bangladesh in general, have much to teach us about the workings of global capitalism. Chevron's ambivalent relationship with the state and local population, and its peculiarly 21st Century requirement for good publicity, or "reputation" -- all are equally important. This talk will discuss the complexities of worldly encounters, not so much between the binaries of "local" and "global," or "the villagers" and "the corporation," but among a range of actors who are both local and global.
Light refreshments will be served.
