From a cybernetic shaman in a futuristic cityscape to a flying bodhisattva, or a “compassionate being” in the Buddhist pantheon, Mariko Mori (born 1967, Tokyo; lives in New York) has transformed herself many times since her memorable debut in the mid-1990s international art scene. Since the late 1990s, however, Mori has made a significant shift in focus of her work, moving away from self-obsessive motif and performance of the early years to a diametrically opposite approach of self-effacement. The image of herself has disappeared from her work in the past decade while her obsession now inclines toward the prehistoric world where everything existed in an amorphous state without text, religion, nation, and without division between humankind and nature.
In fall 2013 Japan Society opens Mori’s major solo exhibition Rebirth: Recent Work by Mariko Mori (October 11, 2013 - January 12, 2014) that will feature over 35 immersive installations, sculptures, drawings, and videos produced by the artist between 2003 and 2012. While presenting her artistic evolution during the last decade, the exhibition will become her statement of rebirth in an age of endangered environment and a lost connection between man and nature. This lecture walks you through Mariko Mori’s artistic ingenuity of the early period and brings you a new understanding of her artistic vision, and how and why it evolved into the current state.

Appointed in July 2012, Dr. Miwako Tezuka is the first Japanese director of Japan Society Gallery in the Society’s over 100-year-long history. She is an internationally recognized curator and expert in modern and contemporary Japanese art. Tezuka received her PhD from the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University in 2005 with the dissertation titled Jikken K?b? (Experimental Workshop): Avant-Garde Experiments in Japanese Art of the 1950s. In 2003, to connect scholars and art professionals who share the interest in contemporary Japanese art, Tezuka cofounded the global online network PoNJA-GenKon (Post-1945 Japanese Art Discussion Group/Gendai Bijutsu Kondankai). Prior to her appointment at Japan Society, Tezuka was Associate Curator at Asia Society in New York, where she was responsible for creating cutting-edge exhibitions of contemporary Asian and Asia American artists.
