The Origins of the Buddha Image -- Revisited
Preoccupied with how the transition from non-figural to anthropomorphic
representations of the Buddha was effected, scholars over the last hundred
years have argued for a Greek, Indian, or Iranian origin of the Buddha
image. This lecture revisits the most cogent arguments in light of recent
discoveries and presents new research on the relevant historical
circumstances during the first century CE.
