This course is an exploration of the Russian Empire through literature. We will be reading works by Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov, in order to study the literary, social, and political consequences of Russia's imperial expansion into the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia, and East Asia. We will use these works to discuss issues of personal and national identity, as well as the role of the artist in an autocratic state. This course is suitable for a variety of majors: English, comparative literature, political science, history, area studies, gender and women's studies, and globalization studies. All readings are in English translation; no previous knowledge of a foreign language is required.

This 5-credit course fulfills a GE requirement!

The Burkle Center seeks proposals for faculty research working groups and faculty research projects for academic year 2013-14. Proposed themes must address a topic or topics related to globalization, international relations, U.S. foreign policy, or issues of international cooperation and conflict. Submission deadline is Friday, April 12, 2013. Applicants will be notified by June 7, 2013. Funds will be dispersed to successful applicants by September 1, 2013.
