A Traveling Text: Souvenirs entomologiques & Shanghai's Neo-Sensationalism

In this talk Professor Peng discusses the traveling of Jean-Henri Fabre’s ten volume work Memories of Insects (1879-1907) from Provence in France to Tokyo and Shanghai during the 1920s and 1930s. She will analyze the Shanghai Neo-Sensationist Ogai Kamome’s (Ouwai Ou) ridicule of entomology, Lu Xun’s advocacy of Fabre, the Japanese anarchists’ translation of Fabre’s work, and the dispute between Fabre and Charles Darwin.

Peng Hsiao-yen is Research Fellow at Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Academia Sinica (Taipei). She is the author of Chaoyue xieshi (Beyond realism), Lishi henduo loudong (There are many loopholes in history), and Haishang shuo qingyu (Desire in Shanghai).
