ROBERT C. KLOOSTERMAN is Professor of Economic Geography/Planning at the University of Amsterdam and Scientific Director Amsterdam Institute of Metropolitan and International Development Studies (AMIDSt). His current research activities centre on new economic activities in urban contexts (notably cultural industries and immigrant businesses) and on linkages within poly-centric urban configurations in advanced economies. Most of this research is undertaken from an explicitly international comparative perspective. A connecting theme concerns the way different (national or local) institutional environments filter, shape, reinforce or block more general, global trends.
