Neil Larsen is Professor of Comparative Literature and Critical Theory at the University of California, Davis, where he previously chaired the Department of Spanish and Classics. His work extends over the areas of Latin American Literature (both Hispanophone and Lusophone), postcolonial studies, cultural studies, and literary and critical theory. He has published more than fifty articles in volumes and journals in the United States, Brazil, Latin America, and Germany, on topics such as violence in modernity, theories of hybridity, the politics of sport, cultural studies, Marxism, imperialism, and postcolonial studies, as well as readings of authors such as Luis Camões, José Carlos Mariátegui, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Rulfo, Julio Cortázar, Roberto Schwarz, and Mario Vargas Llosa. He is the author of three books: Modernism and Hegemony: A Materialist Critique of Aesthetic Agency (University of Minnesota Press, 1990) Reading North by South: On Latin American Literature, Culture and Politics (University of Minnesota Press, 1995), and Determination: Essays on Theory, Narrative and Nation in the Americas (Verso, 2001).
