AfroReggae: Nenhum Motivo Explica a Guerra (AfroReggae: No Motive Explains War)

This documentary focuses on the Grupo Cultural AfroReggae, founded in 1993 in the Rio de Janeiro favela known as Vigário Geral after a police massacre that left 21 people dead. Carlos Diegues focuses on the historical, social – and specially human – aspects behind a Grupo Cultural AfroReggae’s show. Rafael Dragaud and Cacá Diegues spent weeks interviewing AfroReggae artists and people from various favelas. In addition to interviews with the group’s founder and several of its participants, the film features appearances by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, as well as footage from a concert filmed in Rio’s Circo Voador.

The result is a story of Rio de Janeiro’s violence told by those who literally “remained to tell the story”. The film is about people who exposed artistically their scars and so were able to revert the favela’s stigma into charisma.
