DOUBLE EDGE Lecture Series: Toyo Ito

Born in Japan, Ito graduated from Tokyo University's department of architecture in 1965. After working for Kiyonori Kikutake Architect & Associates from 1965 to 1969, he started his own studio, Urban Robot (urbot), in 1971 in Tokyo. The studio later changed its name to Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects. In 1998, Ito served as vice commissioner for Kumamoto Artpolis. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Japanase minister of education's Art Encouragement prize (1998), the minister of art's Academy Prize (1999) and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale (2002). A current project located in California includes a new building for the University of California, Berkeley, Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

Japan and Los Angeles form the eastern and western edges of the world, and diverse cultures and technological advances have flowed to and accumulated at these edges. This series will connect those edges to create a new center for the world and a platform for projecting the future of technology, culture and design around the globe.
