Policing and Conflict Resolution

A public lecture by the Honorable Robert Peirce, British Consul General at Los Angeles

The talk, part of the UCLA School of Public Affairs ‘Consular Connection Fall 2007 Series, will focus on Northern Ireland. The event is co-sponsored by the International Graduate Student Association (IGSA) and the Association for Masters of Public Policy Students (AMPPS).

Peirce, who began his appointment as Consul General in 2005, was formerly the head of the Political and Public Affairs sections of the British Embassy in Washington. He joined the British Diplomatic Service in 1977 and has served in China and Hong Kong and at the United Nations in New York, and has also done a consultancy in Uganda. He also served twice as a member of the Hong Kong Government (1980s and 1990s) and served from 1993 to 1997 as the Secretary responsible for Hong Kong's external affairs. From 1979 to 1997 he was involved in negotiations with China culminating in the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997.

Prior to his service in Washington, he was the chief executive of the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland whose 1999 report has formed the basis of policing reforms in Northern Ireland, following the peace agreement reached in 1998.
