Latin American Institute's pick at the 2008 LOS ANGELES FILM FESTIVAL
Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha takes another look at the dark underside of life in sunny Brazil, this time creating a full-tilt action thriller that has been leaving controversy in its wake wherever it plays. Elite Squad focuses on three cops, two rookies and their burnt-out captain, as they are drawn into a world of rampant police corruption and Rio's most dangerous gang-controlled neighborhoods. Co-writer Rodrigo Pimentel spent 19 years as a military police officer, and his experience brings a frightening authenticity to Padilha's chilling yet sympathetic portrait of men pushed too far.
