Nadje Al-Ali is the Centre Chair and Reader at the Centre for Gender Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.  Her research interests include Gender theory; feminist thought & activism; women, gender & feminisms in the Middle East; secularism and Islamism; transnational migration, diaspora mobilization; gendering violence, war and peace; history of Iraqi women; and the impact of sanctions, war and occupation on Iraqi women.  Her previous publications include  Iraqi Women: Untold Stories From 1948 to the Present (2007) and Secularism, Gender & the State in the Middle East: The Egyptian Women's Movement. (2000).

She will be discussing her new book What kind of Liberation? Women and the Occupation in Iraq. Berkeley: University of California Press (2009).  The book will also be available for sale at this event.
