Modifications to and Comments on the Bible by Hong Xiuquan of the Taiping Movement

This presentation will discuss the relationship between the Taiping Movement (1851-1864) and the Bible. The leader of the movement, Hong Xiuquan, made various types of modifications to the contemporary Chinese translations of the Bible. He also added extensive comments to the Book. The presenter will also contemplate the rationale behind these modifications and comments, as well as their ramifications.

Yiyi Chen teaches the Hebrew Bible and Jewish Culture in the Department of Oriental Studies, Peking University. His research includes the Hebrew Bible in its Ancient near East context, the interactions between the Bible, the Jewish people and China. Chen holds a BA from Peking University, and an MA and PhD from Cornell University.
