The Sixth Annual UCLA Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Student Conference will explore the influence of spatial and cultural displacement in writing and artistic production of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking authors. Variations on this theme include but are not limited to: the reconstruction of cultural identities from a distance, authors settled in foreign countries or impacted by time spent in other countries, immigration and emigration, exile, cultural agency, hegemony, nationalism, imperialism, transnationalism, mestizaje, syncretism, hybridity, travel literature, border and frontier literature.
