Lahra Smith is an assistant professor in the African Studies Program at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. She received her MA in African Studies from UCLA in 2000 and her PhD in Political Science in 2005. Her research interests are ethnicity, citizenship and political institutions. Her dissertation research,
supported by a Fulbright-Hayes Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship, focused on the role of political institutions in addressing conflict based largely on ethnic and language identities in Ethiopia. She was a medium-term election observer with The Carter Center for the post-election fraud investigations in Ethiopia in June and July 2005.
