Pacifying Wartime Technology: The Yamato Museum and Scientific Nationalism in Japan

The Yamato Museum opened in Kure City, Hiroshima, in 2005. It is an unusually popular municipal historical museum, having attracted almost 500,000 visitors in its short life. Its main attraction is the 1/10 model of Battleship Yamato. Its main message is “peace.” How does that work? Using the Yamato Museum as a site of Japan’s scientific nationalism, this talk critically examines the currently prevalent discourse that links wartime technology with Japan’s postwar economic success and its pacifist claim.
Hiromi Mizuno is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, at the University of Minnesota. Her current research includes cultural studies of science and technology, nationalism, war memories, population studies, and postcolonialism. She has also published Science for the Empire: Scientific Nationalism in Modern Japan_ Stanford UP, 2008.
