About the Event:

In the 1980s and 1990s a group of historians and sociologists revolutionized the study of Israeli history. Using a variety of critical approaches, these scholars, often called collectively the Post-Zionists, set about undermining what they perceived to be the founding myths of Israel. The arguments made by the Post-Zionists have, in many ways, become the reigning orthodoxy, but no historiographical trend is permanent. In the last decade, a paradigm shift has occurred in the study of Israeli history. A new generation of scholars has appeared, and this generation, sometimes called "the third wave in Israeli historiography" or "the Post-Post-Zionists," has produced works that differ in many respects from those of the previous, critical, generation. This generation studies new subjects, deploys new types of sources and new writing styles, asks new questions about Israeli society, and its attitude to Zionism is often empathic rather than critical. Prof. Likhovksi describes the new paradigm, comparing it to the old, Post-Zionist paradigm, and suggests some reasons for its appearance in the last decade.
