Professor Arieh Saposnik joined UCLA in 2009 in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. Professor Saposnik came to UCLA from Arizona State University, where he held the Jess Schwartz Chair in Modern Hebrew Culture. His scholarship focuses on Zionism, Jewish nationalism, and the creation of Israeli culture. He studies these in the dual contexts of the Middle East and the crises faced by Jewish societies and cultures, primarily in Europe, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His acclaimed book, "Becoming Hebrew: The Creation of a Jewish National Culture in Ottoman Palestine," was published by Oxford University Press in 2008. Saposnik is a native speaker of English and Hebrew and conducts research in Italian, Yiddish, German, and French.
