South Asian-American Experience and Imperatives

A presentation by Professor Snehendu Kar, UCLA School of Public Health

The session would present key findings of three exploratory studies of South Asian American immigrants, and discuss implications for policy, research , and action. In addition, in response to requests from several students, Prof. Kar will briefly discuss career opportunities in Public Health both nationally and internationally.

About the Speaker:

Since 1979, Professor Snehendu Kar served as a full Professor of Public Health and of Asian American Studies (AAS), and as the Founding Director of the Executive style MPH Program for Health Professionals (in Community Health Sciences) at the UCLA. He has also served in several academic leadership positions including as the Associate Dean and Chair of then single-department School of Public Health, and as the Chair of the AAS Interdepartmental program. Currently Dr. Kar also serves as a Distinguished Professor and the Academic Advisor at the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) that was founded and mandated to establish several world class Public Health Schools in India.

Research interests include:

Health promotion, communication & education, multi-cultural issues in health promotion, empowerment of women & leadership development; Asian American studies; international health; indicators of health promotion and primary health care.
