The son of legendary Mexican President, General Lázaro Cárdenas, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano is the founder of the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), former governor of the state of Michoacán (1980) and first democratically elected head of government of Mexico City (1997). A three time presidential candidate (in 1988 for the Frente Democrático Nacional and in 1994 and 2000 for the PRD), Cárdenas Solórzano is a leading figure in Mexico’s democratic transformation.

In this talk, Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas assesses the currency of the ideals and goals of the Mexican Revolution as well as its consequences and chief achievements, such as the social program of the 1917 Constitution and the nationalization of the oil industry. In the context of the challenges Mexico faces, Cárdenas explains why the fundamental principles of the Revolution are current and valid.
