UCLA Anderson School of Management presents Gurcharan Das, best-selling author, management guru, public intellectual and former CEO of Procter & Gamble India.
Join Gurcharan Das, best-selling author, management guru, public intellectual and former CEO of Procter & Gamble India, for an intriguing discussion about the various themes explored in his latest book, The Difficulty of Being Good: On the Subtle Art of Dharma. Das' latest work dissects the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharata, in order to answer the question, "why be good?" The Mahabharata contains philosophical material that explores the four goals of life: dharma (right action), artha (purpose), kama (pleasure), and moksha (liberation).
Before retiring in 1995 to become a full-time writer, Das served as CEO of Procter & Gamble India. Since leaving the corporate world, Das has produced a number of literary works, including a novel, A Fine Family, a book of essays, The Elephant Paradigm, and an anthology titled Three English Plays. Das's international bestseller, India Unbound, has been published in 17 languages and filmed by the BBC.
In addition to writing a Sunday column for the Times of India and several other Indian publications, Das also contributes periodic guest columns to The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs and Newsweek. Das graduated with honors from Harvard University, where he studied philosophy, politics and Sanskrit. He later returned to attend Harvard Business School.
