A film directed by Cacau Amaral, Cadu Barcellos , Luciana Bezerra, Manaíra Carneiro, Rodrigo Felha, Wagner Novais, and Luciano Vidigal
5 X FAVELA is composed of five short films written, directed, and acted by favela (slum) residents from Rio de Janeiro. Each film offers a rare glimpse at the different aspects of day-to-day life in the favela communities. The five independent narratives are a result of a years-long project to cultivate talented young filmmakers from the favelas of Rio by granting them access to production resources and training from top Brazilian filmmakers.
Source of Income, Rice and Beans, Concert for Violin, Let it Fly, and Let There be Light, are both comic and tragic, and steer away from the stereotypes of violence, which are generally employed to represent life in these communities. 5 X Favela, Now For Ourselves reflects the voice and point of view of the youth living (and growing up) in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
